Having a Baby Abroad

Today I’m interviewing Karen Wilmot – also known as The Virtual Midwife.

You didn’t know such a thing existed? Me neither, but boy am I grateful to hear it does!

Pregnancy is such an incredible yet overwhelming experience and I always longed for someone who’d “hold my hand” through it, someone I could ask all the questions that arise – and that you may not want to bother your (foreign) doctor with. Someone who knows, someone who understands, someone who’s Team ME!

Well, whether you’re planning to have a baby, currently pregnant or you’ve already given birth abroad: you’re gonna love this episode and you’re gonna love

Karen Wilmot: The Virtual Midwife

She has been supporting families around the globe for over a decade in person and online. An adventurer, traveller and entrepreneur, she has worked around the world and continues to find new and challenging ways to improve health care for women during pregnancy and birth using online technology.

Her book Giving Birth Abroad – The Essential Guide for Expats Expecting provides the road map to embrace pregnancy as part of the expat adventure and is packed with checklists and cheat sheets coupled with practical wisdom of 20 years abroad.

Karen’s career has enabled her to work on a diamond mine in South Africa, in a small village in Mexico, in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia and with the Royal family of Oman. This rich diversity of experience has given her a deep insight into the needs of women across countries and cultures as well as the unique challenges that expats face.

This interview will:

– give you hope and trust for your pregnancy and birth abroad (possibly still during the pandemic!)

– offer some mindset shifts to deal with pregnancy-related stress and anxiety

– help you navigate doctor’s visits abroad

– show you, how much control you have – even if you don’t feel like you do

– tackle cultural differences, and how to find your way

– make you feel empowered to take more responsibility in the matter

You’ll also get me totally oversharing my pregnancy and birth experiences abroad 😀

I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it. And if you are expecting I wish you all the best on this beautiful journey! Do let me know how it all went!
