The Empowered Stay-At-Home Expat Mom

I started this Podcast to empower accompanying spouses to become more empowered, more independent and in control of their lives. But what this will look like, will depend solely on your values, priorities, goals and circumstances.

There’s an important group of ladies (who also make up a large portion of my coaching clients) that often does not receive enough credit: The stay-at-home expat or diplomatic mom and housewife. And this episode is to tell you that I see you, I value you and everything you do!

Now of course with accompanying wives – be it expat or diplomat – it’s often not a free choice or not entirely. There are indeed challenges along the way that make working and building a career difficult.

Career on hold

So if you are struggling with your current role as a stay-at-home-mom and housewife, this episode will help you to:

  • embrace the status quo
  • think of yourself in a completely differently way (confidence boost)
  • show you how to master the most common pain points of stay-at-home-moms
  • and offer guidance to find your way out of financial dependency, unemployability, lack of intellectual stimulation

And if you are fully embracing your role as a stay-at-home mom, this episode will:

  • serve as a little pep talk while also

Creating a Strong Family Culture Abroad

As expat moms, our third culture kids’ wellbeing tends to be one of our biggest concerns:

How can we make sure that they’ll embrace and thrive in their international lifestyle?
What can we do to strengthen their self esteem, sense of belonging and perceived identity?
How can we honour our roots while at the same time enjoy the multicultural influences we’re exposed to along the way?
How can we, as a family, stick together – despite the challenges a global lifestyle / move abroad or return home can bring?

Strengthening your family identity

When our own and our surroundings change, it becomes even more important to establish a strong sense of rootedness, safety and support within our family.

You can imagine that – as the mother of 3 multicultural, bilingual boys – these questions are always top of mind. And in this episode, I share my 7 favorite tips with you for creating that strong family culture abroad.

You’ll find out:

– how living abroad can allow you to “get to know” each family member on a deeper level

– why stories are so powerful and how use them to create a strong family culture

– why a balance of “roots” and “wings” will benefit your third culture children

– how to create unique family traditions that represent your globally mobile / multicultural family’s journey

as well as some fun and original ways to strengthen your family’s cohesion abroad!

Having a Baby Abroad

Today I’m interviewing Karen Wilmot – also known as The Virtual Midwife.

You didn’t know such a thing existed? Me neither, but boy am I grateful to hear it does!

Pregnancy is such an incredible yet overwhelming experience and I always longed for someone who’d “hold my hand” through it, someone I could ask all the questions that arise – and that you may not want to bother your (foreign) doctor with. Someone who knows, someone who understands, someone who’s Team ME!

Well, whether you’re planning to have a baby, currently pregnant or you’ve already given birth abroad: you’re gonna love this episode and you’re gonna love

Karen Wilmot: The Virtual Midwife

She has been supporting families around the globe for over a decade in person and online. An adventurer, traveller and entrepreneur, she has worked around the world and continues to find new and challenging ways to improve health care for women during pregnancy and birth using online technology.

Her book Giving Birth Abroad – The Essential Guide for Expats Expecting provides the road map to embrace pregnancy as part of the expat adventure and is packed with checklists and cheat sheets coupled with practical wisdom of 20 years abroad.

Karen’s career has enabled her to work on a diamond mine in South Africa, in a small village in Mexico, in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia and with the Royal family of Oman. This rich diversity of experience has given her a deep insight into the needs of women across countries and cultures as well as the unique challenges that expats face.

Episode 22: Empowering Yourself and Other Women – with Nyna Caputi

Episode 22: Empowering Yourself and Other Women – with Nyna Caputi

Listen on: iTunes │Spotify StitcherYouTube

On the occasion of the upcoming International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, I wanted to dedicate a Podcast episode to how (expat) women can empower themselves and others.

And who’d be a better guest to interview for this than Nyna Caputi!?

Meet Nyna:

she’s the founder and CEO of  “The Expat Woman” Membership Club, and has hosted countless events – in person and online – for women (with themes ranging from networking and support to professional growth and leadership).

She’s also an award-winning documentary film-maker and producer. Her most recent work “Petals in the Dust” deals with gender violence in India, an issue dear to her heart for which she’s organized awareness campaigns.

Nyna has received several awards and recognitions for her efforts in Women’s Empowerment: I guess it’s fair to say that this is her life’s big mission!

An Accidental Expat

Nyna came to New York from her native India to study film. She was only supposed to be there for a short time but fell in love, got married and moved to her husband’s hometown San Francisco.

In the interview she describes how difficult it was at the beginning: her husband traveled a lot for work, she was not yet allowed to work because of Visa restrictions, all their friends were American and she felt like the odd one out.

How do you dress for an American bridal shower? What do you bring to a “potluck”? How do job interviews work in the US?

I’m sure all of us, especially those who moved to their partner’s home country, will be able to relate to this rocky start!

Founding “The Expat Woman”

It was out of her own necessity and the relization that there were other women out there who felt just like her – lonely, lost and out of place – that she started The Expat Woman.

It’s a supportive, membership-based network for professional expat women. Events are organized several times a year  – and Nyna now also shares her expertise in event hosting through her “Digital Event Academy”.

But what you probably wouldn’t guess is that for a long time she was:

Battling with Imposter Syndrome and Fear of Selling

Indeed, many women suffer from this – and expat and minority women are even more at risk of questoning their capabilities and value, fearing to put themselves out there and charging for their products and services.

In the interview, Nyna shares her story and what’s helped her to overcome it.

How can you empower yourself and other women?

In order to empower other women, Nyna points out, we must first empower ourselves.

I believe it’s so important to create an evironment of mutual support and encouragement. In today’s episode, Nyna and I discuss what each of us can do to contribute to that and also what we should stop doing. After all, women need to progress as a collective, and never at the cost of other women!

Here are some additional action steps I’d like to propose:

1. Self-care
What can you do that’d make you feel great today? What / who do you have to say no to? ⁣

2. Show some love
Make heartfelt compliments to as many women as you possibly can! ⁣Notice the good in them, and help them to see it too.

3. Lift a sister up
Do you know women around you who are struggling? Have you asked? What can you do to lift them up? (Often, simply being there and showing that you care works like magic!)⁣

4. Support Female-founded businesses

Even if you decide not to purchase their products or services, you could give recommendations, follow and like their efforts on social media, give constructive feedback or simply cheer them on!

Sometimes a small gesture goes a really long way, and you never know which of these female founders is secretly battling with the imposter syndrome or self-doubt so some encouragement could make her day!

HAPPY WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH!
