Navigating life in a different culture…

… is full of challenges. Even in seemingly similar countries and cultures, expats encounter differences, obstacles and misunderstandings. But when the culture is so different that there’s little to no reference at all for you to understand it – you’re in for a roller coaster ride!

This is what happened to Nicole, my guest today, who moved to Xi’an / China with her husband and pre-schooler. With almost no other expats around, Nicole and her family turned into quite an “attraction” in the capital of Shaanxi Province.

After a difficult phase of adjustment, Xi’an and its people started to grow on Nicole, leading her to write her book, “China Blonde”, in which she narrates her experiences during the 3 years she called this city her home.

Reading this book, I almost felt like I was there too (a pleasant experience, in times of the pandemic!). Since I enjoyed it so much, I thought that in this episode I’d read short passages of the book with you, on which Nicole will elaborate and share her perspective.

We talk about:

  • the importance of friendships abroad
  • the pressures on the relationship
(especially when one partner works and is “all set”, and the other is left to find her way on her own)
  • the question of identity and how this concept is challenged when you’re so far outside your comfort zone
  • finding your purpose, against the odds
  • culture shock
  • and how to find your way and navigate life in an extremely different culture

About Nicole

Hailing from the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand, Nicole Webb moved to Australia as a teenager with her family. There she went on to pursue her dream of becoming a television journalist and newsreader.

After a decade at Sky News doing just that, Nicole (and baby bump) and her husband, James, who works in 5-Star hotels, decided to do something akin to carpe diem. A few deep breaths later Nicole and James found themselves in the city that never sleeps, Hong Kong, where the family, which now included blondie Ava, survived and thrived for four years before moving to Xi’an, China, where they lived for almost three years.

Nicole, James and Ava are now back in Sydney, for the time being, where Nicole works as a journalist, writer, speaker, media trainer and consultant. China Blonde is Nicole’s first book, and she is working on her second – a novel set in Hong Kong.

What We Want Folks Back Home To Know About Our Life Abroad

Oftentimes, our loved ones back home can have a wrong impression of what our life abroad is like; they might not understand our choices, or don’t seem to make an effort do see our point of view. They may react to certain things in ways that are disappointing our even hurtful.

This can lead to a disconnect on both sides. And that’s such a shame, especially considering that one of the most common challenges expats face is loneliness and lack of a network and support.

It also makes “home” seem even further away, or even makes us question whether we still belong there…

What they should know about expat life

In this episode, I talk about 7 common pain points expats have and would like to clarify for the people back home.

And I’m joined by several other expat ladies, who’ve kindly contributed their experiences and thoughts on this episode!

By the way if you’re wondering: “why was I not asked!?” – that’s probably because you’re not on my e-mail list. To change that sign up here:

3 Mindsets That Changed My Life

I like to think of our mindset as the ‘container of our thoughts’. And the nature of this container, will shape the thoughts that come to us more easily.

In this episode I explain that our THOUGHTS are responsible for our feelings – not the way around as we may be led to think. This has been scientifically proven and thus showcases the importance of watching our thoughts and becoming more conscious of the things we say to ourselves in our mind.

One very effective way to achieve that, is by developing and adopting a mindset that will set the trend for and attract certain, intentional thoughts.

In this episode you’ll find out about :

  • my 3 favourite mindset hacks and
  • how they’ll contribute to your mental and physical wellbeing.

Which of these resonated the most with you? Which will you give a try? Let me know by e-mailing me

Just a diplomatic spouse?

I’ve recently had the pleasure to chat with Alexandra Paucescu, a Romanian-born diplomatic spouse, currently based in Berlin.

An encounter with someone who, disappointed to find out he was not speaking to her husband, exclaimed: “She’s just a diplomatic spouse!” inspired the name of her book and the title of this episode.

My grandmother was a foreign-born (Spanish) diplomatic spouse, and accompanied my grandfather, an Austrian diplomat, to numerous postings on 3 continents.

I remember visiting them when they were ambassadors in Argentina, at around age 10, leaving me in awe of what seemed like such a glamorous lifestyle. (As a matter of fact, I myself was considering a diplomatic career when studying International Relations in the UK.)

But it also comes with many challenges that are often not easily discussed and conveyed to others, who’d rather look at diplomatic life and wives as clichés.

Diplomatic and expat wives share many commonalities and so it’s important to share our stories and experiences with each other and offer mutual support!

Meet Alexandra

She’s a Management graduate with a Master in Business, studied Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations. She speaks Romanian, English, French, German and Italian. Turned diplomatic spouse at age 30, she published a book about diplomatic life, writes articles and gives lectures on intercultural communication.

In this episode you’ll find out about

  • Alexandra’s background and journey as a diplomatic spouse

  • what has helped her adjust and find her way

  • the advice she’d give to women new to this lifestyle

  • how to find meaningful outlets for your professional aspirations

  • establishing team spirit and ground rules with your husband

  • creating a sisterhood with likeminded people

  • and more

Seit ihrer Rückkehr aus Michigan Anfang 2020 bildet “Southbound – stories to be told” ihr zweites berufliches Standbein.
